As the project has now finished, I will be moving onto my next project, which means I will be leaving the Bloomsbury Colleges. I would like to thank everybody involved in the project and a huge thank you to the APT STAIRS team for being such a great team to work for. It has been a successful project that I was proud to be a part of and hope to stay in contact with you all.

New African mobile surveillance and feedback project

Enhancing Disease Surveillance And Response In The Animal And Human Health Sectors Through The Application Of Mobile Technologies

Mobile technologies are now increasingly being used across Africa for everything from phone to SMS texting. This is associated with widespread access to affordable mobile networks and handsets. In many cases this technology has overtaken the use of landline phones, radio and internet for communication in rural communities. Innovative examples of the potential of these mobile devices including the ability to make small SMS payments, receiving text alerts of market prices or receiving medication reminders for TB treatment.

The recent development and access to second generation mobile devices offers significant new opportunities for disease surveillance and prevention. The handsets now have accurate geo spatial sensing which enables accurate tracking of location and linking to text, image and data. The potential to insert memory cards means that not only can the devices temporarily capture data off line where a network is poor. This additional memory means that the handsets can be populated with appropriate disease extensions and support material in video, audio and textual format which the operator can refer to in the field.

There are already Open Source tools available for the Android platform which can be relatively simply be engineered to enable disease data collection. Data entry can be using a pen device, a keypad or touch screen and GPS settings are captured automatically. This data can then be transmitted through a GPRS or low bandwidth network to a central server where it can be analyses, mapped and modelled almost immediately after the data has been collected. The field worker can then be referred to information on the handset memory in the local language for example with advice on suitable biosecurity measure to adopt.

This initiative therefore aims to explore the opportunities provided by these mobile technologies to enhance disease surveillance in the human and animal health sectors, reporting and feedback in Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya/Uganda. It will draw on the extensive experience of its partners working in the field in South-east Asia and Southern/Eastern Africa, university based research and development expertise and the insight and experience provided by Google and other technology providers.
The project has been generously funded by the Rockefeller Foundation through the Southern African Centre for Infectious Disease Surveillance (http://www.sacids.org/) with an initial Tanzanian planning workshop in January 2010.

As part of the APT for AFRICA project, we are trying to develop a range of video and audio podcasts related to veterinary topics in Africa. We have currently have a recent graduate, Bev Panto, who will be visiting Kenya and Tanzania to record a series of video interviews using a basic Flip camera for use in Development Education. More details to follow.

Androids for Africa at Hanheld 2009

Nick Short and Andrew Hagner gave this presentation at the Handheld Learning 2009 conference in October 2009. They described how in Tanzania, the Royal Veterinary College has been working with aid projects and government services to explore the potential of mobile devices. By using the GPS geo-spatial functionality of the newer smart phones it is now possible to accurately track the spread of diseases such as avian flu. Working with the Google Android platform, the team have now developed a set of phone based forms which can capture and transmit key disease data to a central server.

Taking APT to Africa

The RVC Undergraduate Research Team (www.rvc.ac.uk/urt) has just returned from their project on East Coast Fever in the cattle of Zanzibar. This project also served as a pilot for the use of Google Android Platform devices for the collection of field data via the Google Open Data Kit. The project was a big success as over 400 animals were sampled from all parts of the main island. The devices were also a huge hit with the team who found them very easy to use for both collecting physical exam data and updating Twitter, Facebook, and the team blog (http://urt2009zanzibar.blogspot.com/search?q). The project hopes to provide answers to the Zanzibar Government about which vaccine strains to use as well as helping this exciting new mobile technology through its growing pains.

This week, Sarah Sherman presented at ALT-C 2009 (the Association of Learning Technology's annual conference). Focusing on the APT Model, Sarah highlighted the success of the project and the various offspring projects that have grown out of the APT approach. You can access the presentation here.

e-Cases presented at AMEE, Malaga!

The e-Cases project was presented on Monday 31^st August at the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) conference, which was held in Malaga. This conference brings together those interested in Medical education (plus a few vets!) from all over the globe, and is the biggest of its kind.

Chris Trace, from the Royal Veterinary College, gave a ten minute presentation to a packed room. He then answered questions from the delegates for a further five minutes. The project was well-received by the medics there present, and seemed to spark some interest!

Presentation at UCISA

Today the APT Director (Nick Short) and APT Project Manager (Sarah Sherman) presented at 'Universities and Colleges Informations Systems Association' (UCISA) to share experiences from the APT project.

They presented on the approach taken in Bloomsbury to introduce online collaboration amongst users, along with providing examples of how online tools were utilised to reach the needs for staff and students.
The presentation concluded with a discussion on the future opportunities offered by working in the 'cloud' together, mentioning the potential project APT for Africa.

APT Extension Project seminar/workshop

Last week the APT team held an afternoon seminar/workshop with the Centre for Distance Education (CDE), University of London, on the benefits of using social tools in education.
The seminar involved an introduction to the Bloomsbury consortium, shared experiences from the APT project on applying social tools in educational contexts, followed by an interactive workshop in Google Docs.

The event attracted learning technologists, managers, teachers, directors, advisers from across a wide range of university's in London, where discussions were held about how collaborative tools might be used to enhance learning, teaching and working in their institutions.

Google I/O Conference

As part of this collaboration, APT secured a small amount of funding from JISC to send Kevin McDonagh of Android out to the Google I/O Conference in California last week.

APT for Africa

We are now working to take the APT project into a new context through partnerships in Africa. The idea is that the basis step by step model for implementing appropriate technology also has a relevance to projects in less developed countries. We re therefore looking to coolaborate woith communiuty based projects to explore the use of mobile phones running Android, Google forms and podcasting.

Our first initiative aims to explore the opportunities provided by mobile technologies to enhance animal disease surveillance, reporting and feedback in Africa. It will draw on the extensive experience of its partners working in the field, university based research and development expertise and the insight and experience provided by Google and other technology providers.

Development Model

The APT for Africa initiative builds on the JISC funded EMERGE programme and the Users and Innovation Development Model. This model has been adapted by the Bloomsbury Colleges to help create and implement a step based introduction to Appropriate and Practical Technology. This has been used to introduce a range of Google tools into teaching and research with significant success (www.bloomsbury.ac.uk/apt ). The intention is now to extend this approach to enable collaboration with partners in livestock and wider development arena .

Partners

The following partners are associated with this initiative:

London International Development Centre – coordinates the development activities of all 6 Bloomsbury Colleges
Souther African Centre for Disease Surveillance – has a remit to promote One Health including animal disease surveillance
Bloomsbury Learning Environment – experience of working with the UIDM model in collaboration with Google
London Knowledge Lab – extensive R and D experience in the use of mobile technologies
Vetaid – an animal health NGO with extensive experience in East Africa
Google.org – provided support for SACIDS and the use of mobile technologies in the field
JISC – government agency which provides support for the UIDM
Novoda – Android software developer

Application

Using the UIDM methodology, the partners will work with key stakeholders in animal health to identify appropriate and practical mobile innovations. In particular this could focus on the following areas:

Use of mobile phone devices to capture GPS based disease data by field staff for surveillance purposes
Disease, population, environment and vaccination monitoring using mobile devices
Decision, practical and professional support for front line staff from central offices
Access to location/context sensitive disease/treatment information in text/audio/video format
Local language based resources to support extension, education and advisory services
Developing new mobile communities of practice to share experience and support
Providing cross disciplinary services as part of the One Health agenda

These approaches will be trialled in a number of settings including:

Zanzibar – RVC student research project on East Coast Fever monitoring working with London Knowledge Lab
Arusha – Vetaid project with Community Animal Health Workers on disease surveillance
SACIDS – government veterinary surveillance programmes funded by Google and Rockefeller
Nairobi Veterinary School - educational programs on ECF working with British Council

Presenting in Barcelona

Last week, Sarah Sherman (Project Manager) and Abigail Deamer (one of the APT STAIRS Demonstrator Leaders) attended the Blackboard European Conference in Barcelona where they presented at a poster session. The London International Development Centre (LIDC), where Abby is the Centre Manager, uses a GoogleDocs form to register members. The registration information feeds into a GoogleDocs spreadsheet, which acts as the Centre's membership database. A search tool for the database was developed to enable members to search for common areas of interest within the confines of the Blackboard area used by LIDC. The search tool is available as a stand alone tool, which is available here.

APT STAIRS demo at the JISC Conference 2009

Last month, Nick Short (Project Director) and Sarah Sherman (Project Manager) with David Flanders (Lead for Technology) presented at the JISC Conference 2009 in Edinburgh. The presentation focused on the concept behind the APT STAIRS project and was delivered as one of the live, demonstration sessions. Delegates were told how the Bloomsbury team developed the model of a simple, step-by-step approach to adopting innovative technology to support learning, teaching, research and administration.

This diagram illustrates the technological gap - observed in Bloomsbury - between students and staff (represented in this cartoon as Lecturers). Simple technology, such as GoogleDocs, can be used to bridge the gap at level (1). As users develop their abilities and advance the staircase, they can try out more challenging tools.

JISC Next Generation Technologies in Practice Conference

APT STAIRS project team members Sarah Sherman and Tim Neumann delivered a presentation on the concept behind the project and the skills developed by stakeholders as a result of the project. The JISC Next Generation Technologies in Practice conference was attended by members of the academic sector across the UK in addition to fellow members of the Emerge community. The conference, which took place at Loughborough University, provided a fantastic opportunity for Sarah and Tim to let people know the successes achieved by the project, leading to a number of interested individuals wishing to try out online collaborative tools.

APT STAIRS and the OSCELET community

The project demonstrator for the London International Development Centre (http://www.lidc.org.uk) involved the creation of a Google Docs spreadsheet to manage their membership directory. LIDC has developed a Blackboard Building Block, which uses the Google Docs Spreadsheet API to search for members with particular interests, presenting the results in Blackboard. This means that only members, who are all enroled into a Blackboard Organisation for LIDC, can access the database. Interview with Emerge

As the APT STAIRS project is nearing to an end, we are currently disseminating our findings to share our experience with others. Last week our Project Manager (Sarah Sherman) and myself (Project Officer) were interviewed by a member of the Emerge Community (Mitul Shukla) who works for Bedfordshire university in the Institute for Research in Applicable Computing department .
Mitul is responsible for researching and collecting data on the experience of projects within the Emerge Community. So from our hour interview on Elluminate we covered many aspects of our project from our original bid, our findings, our engagement with users, our choice of technologies i.e Google Docs and our evaluation plans. This information will be filed as a new case study to inform future Emerge and JISC projects, events and processes.

Training for Havering Sixth Form College

Anna Campbell, Psychology lecturer at Havering Sixth Form College and sessional tutor at Birkbeck and the Mary Ward Centre met with the APT STAIRS Project Manager, Sarah Sherman, last week. The meeting provided Anna with a face-to-face training session on Google Docs and to find out how the tool is being used in Bloomsbury. This is the first dissemination engagement we've had with a member of staff at an FE College - and it went really well. Anna went away with some thoughts on how she might use the tool to support her teaching.

Discussions with the Google Product Marketing Manager

Last week the team and I held discussions with Andrew Chang, the Google Product Marketing Manager, to share our ideas about new educational templates in Google Docs.

Andrew was keen to listen to our possible template ideas, such as Lab books, e-portfolios and assessment forms and encouraged our creative ideas to help students and staff in educational institutions.

Andrew also shared Google's future plans with the templates in Google Docs, which should provide more flexibility and a more 'personal experience' for Gdocs's template users. So within the next 3-4 months we should expect to see new things from Google...

SOAS release another Google application - Google Docs

As mentioned before SOAS migrated to Google Apps in May 2008, changing their applications to Gmail, Google Calendar and the Google Talk (for instant messaging).
This month they have just released Google Docs, which they hope will encourage students and staff at SOAS to collaborate more with each other.

Google Docs presentations have been running this week to offer an overview of the features and functions available and to help create an awareness of the new tool.

The IT Team at SOAS released Google Docs to their all staff and students accounts 6 days ago and have not had any complaints or queries so far! It appears the students and staff have adapted to the new tool quite well.

Back up Google Docs to your hard drive

You can now download all your Google Docs documents to your hard drive with a programme called Syncplicity.

Syncplicity is a file back up and synchronization service, that works with your Google Docs account.

Once that initial sync process between Google Docs and your local Office document folder is done, you can edit any document locally using Microsoft Office Word or OpenOffice and Syncplicity will automatically upload the updated version of the document on to Google Docs.

This is very handy if you need to edit documents offline (like in a plane or a taxi) without requiring a browser with Google Gears.

Also, if you create a new document in your Google Docs account, a copy of that document will get downloaded to the local folder so you always have access to the document even without internet.

At the moment Syncplicity is free during it's beta period, and is very easy to use, with it's colourful user friendly interface.

New Spreadsheet interface

The new Spreadsheet interface has been updated, to look and feel more like the other Google Docs applications - Presenter and the Word Processor. The menu tool bar is neatly compacted at the top left hand side of the screen to access all the spreadsheet features, and shortcuts for all the most commonly used features have been placed in the tool bar.

The Forms have been updated too, being able to use drag and drop options when creating forms, as well as providing a new feature called 'show analysis', which displays your results in a graphical representation.

Bloomsbury Survey Results

As our Bloomsbury Survey of Web Use officially closed last week, we randomly selected our 5 lucky winners, for the £300, £150 and 3 x £50 Amazon vouchers. The winners from the RVC, BBK, IOE and SOAS will be presented with their Amazon vouchers at the Project Demonstrator Lunch on the 11th November at the London Knowledge Lab.

We are currently working with the survey data, which we will share with you on our website soon. We will create a brand new page on our website devoted to the survey analysis, to represent web use patterns, which we will be using as a guide for our next phase of the project - Google Docs API developments.

Google Mobile launches tomorrow!

The long awaited Google mobile phone will be launched tomorrow in the states, which will no doubt run in competition with Apple's Iphone in the run up to Christmas. It's expected the Smartphone's will be released in the UK in November.

Google have kept quiet about the technology of the phone, so no one knows exactly what to expect, other than the mobile phone will run on 'Android', which is Google's own mobile operating system, and it will be touch screen with a pull out QWERTY keyboard. It will also have a built-in GPS (global positioning system), a tilt sensor for gaming and will be available exclusively on the T-Mobile network. We also expect that the new phone will be able to run Google's range of web applications, such as Google maps, Gmail, Googles new web browser Chrome and of course Google Docs : ) So hopefully we can start editing on Google Docs with Google's handheld device, and not just view!

By relying on the familiar ways students use these tools, faculty can enable new forms of communication and engagement in the classroom, permitting extensions and variations of the informal interactions already occurring in classrooms and hallways, and creating new frontiers for collaboration across geographic boundaries."

Google's new browser

Google have recently launched their very own web browser - Chrome.

Chrome has been recognised as being part browser and part operating system from it's multitude of features, beating other popular web browsers in speed, stability and search.
Although Google say they are not necessarily competing with popular web browsers, such as Firefox or Internet Explorer, instead they are attempting to provide a tool for todays web applications and todays web users. It has been recognised that the web is being increasingly used for online applications, and Google wanted to create a new browser to manage multiple applications such as Facebook, Bebo, Flickr, Zoho and Google Apps. So this is good news for us Google Docs users, as this will mean a much faster and efficient service with all Google's applications.

Google Docs Forms update

Google Docs have recently gone through some changes with the Form application.

With Forms you can create surveys or any question based form, and collect the data from a GDocs Spreadsheet. Originally you could only create Forms (which are part of the Spreadsheet application in GDocs) from a Spreadsheet.
Recently the Forms have gone through a few interface changes; firstly the Forms can now be created from the list page view (Google Docs home) from the New drop down menu, secondly there have been some GUI changes, to make the application easier to use.

The Google Docs Training page consists of 4 sections to help you get started with Google Docs. There's a Quick Guide manual to Google Docs, a help point to ask any queries you have with Google Docs and YouTube and Screencast videos on using Google Docs.

Google V's Microsoft

It seems that we are not only comparing web based office suites, but also the platform giants - Google and Microsoft.

Since the explosion of 'collaborative office based suites' (such as Google Docs, Zoho and ThinkFree) Microsoft have since launched their own collaborative office version called 'Office Live Workspace'. Whilst there have been many comparison reviews on Google Docs V's Office Live, Google Docs appears to come out on top when it comes to the collaboration features. However, some users may prefer using the familiar MS Office interface.

Whilst the debate over Google and Microsoft continues, I think Google Docs should pay more attention to the competition from the new up and coming collaborative tools online, such as Remember The Milk and Seesmic.

Google Docs Vs Zoho Vs ThinkFree

Web-based office suites have made a transition. While at first they simply imitated desktop applications in a Web browser, the new collaborative capabilities have developed new ways of working and studying, creating a whole new market in the web 2:0 environment. They've begun to grow away from simply imitating Microsoft Office to developing personalities of their own.

Google Docs, Zoho and ThinkFree appear to be the most popular web based office suites, and they have all been written about extensively on the web, so I'll save you from yet another comparison review! But from all the reviews I have read, in comparing functions and features, Computer World's review is the best one I have read so far. So have a read or judge for yourself to decide which one is best for you!

Over 2,000 institutions worldwide using Google Apps

Carrying on from my last blog on the Google Apps Education Edition , the latest news has just revealed that over 13 U.S institutions have just signed up to Google Apps, bringing over 2,000 institutions worldwide to Google's cloud computing.

Jeff Keltner, Google business development manager, wrote in his latest blog post. "Google Apps Education Edition is gaining momentum: more than a million users worldwide have adopted it to embrace the possibilities of technology in education."

The schools that have recently signed on to Apps include Collin County Community College District, Francis Marion University, George Washington University, Indiana University, Kean University, Kent State University, Kishwaukee College, Loyola Marymount University, Montgomery County Community College, New Jersey Institute of Technology, University of Florida, University of San Diego, and the University of Virginia.

Since debuting in October 2006, the free access to Google Apps allows students and staff free access to email and collaboration tools. It's also been reported that it's quick and easy to set up, as well as being versatile. "Technically Google Apps can be up and running in a matter of minutes," according to a spokeswoman. "Some universities offer services to just students and others offer to students, faculty, and staff."

The Web is less about the individual and more about a personal experience of participating in a group for work and play, says Jeff Keltner, business development manager for Google Apps Education Edition.

Google are also launching a 'App to School' road trip - a 10 stop tour coast to coast to talk about Google's applications.

The Telegraph moves over to Google

It seems we're not the only ones trialling out Google applications in professional settings. The Telegraph Media Group (TMG) began trialling out Google Apps 6 months ago, and they have already decided to move all of their 1,400 employees over to Google Apps. To read more click here.

Google Apps is a suite of applications; Google Calendar, Google Sites, Gmail, Google Talk and of course Google Docs! These applications are designed to increase collaboration amongst group settings.

After the Telegraph's 6 month trial with Google Apps, the TMG CIO Paul Cheesbrough said: "The feedback was, as far as IT trials go, overwhelmingly positive. People were able to find things much quicker and share things much quicker. So the feedback was good and certainly the bulk of the people who trialled, it would have been very difficult to take it away from them - and if you'd have said that to me at the beginning of the year, that would have been quite surprising."

Google also offers a package for educational institutions, Google Apps Educational Edition, which the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, has recently adopted. Click here to read more.

Google Docs just gets better!

Google Docs is constantly updating to make our lives easier, and now they have just brought out Templates and Dashboard.

Templates allow you to create a document, presentation or spreadsheet easily and quickly, by offering pre-set designs that you can use for your own purpose. There are over 300 template designs to choose from, whether you're creating an invoice, timesheet, slideshow, party/wedding invitation, budget form etc, they have it all for you!

To create a template simply select 'new' from the list page view and select 'Form template' from the drop down menu. You should then see a page that looks something like this:

The other new feature is the Google Docs Dashboard which saves advanced searches. Besides showing the list of saved searches in the sidebar, Google Docs creates an iGoogle-like page with containers that include results for each of your saved searches. You can reorder the containers using drag and drop and select the maximum number of results.

Depending on the way you use Google Docs, the dashboard is a great opportunity to group related documents, see a list of recently published documents, display the content of a folder or the documents shared with you by a collaborator.

To create a new container, click on "Show search options", build your query and click on "Save this search". A simple example of container shows all the documents from the "School" folder that have been shared with you:

Post Launch

Apologies I haven't written in here sooner, we were all having a little breather after the launch event. The team and I were extremely pleased with the success of the event; from the interesting speakers from Google and JISC, to the audience enthusiasm with Google Docs. The pictures of the event are on the site, so have a browse through!

Now the launch has officially opened our APT STAIRS project, we're all getting our hands dirty with Google Docs. So far we have 6 Google Docs projects lifted off the ground, and have more in the pipeline. We have a variety of projects on the go, including a project involving the use of Ipod Touch mobile devices in the classroom.

I'll be back soon with more blogs and updates on the website, including a new page on project developments.

Recently we've all been working hard on the APT STAIRS Project Launch for this Thursday at the London Knowledge Lab.
